Lions Cut Joique Bell From Crowded Backfield

In a move that almost seemed inevitable since the start of the 2015 season, according to multiple sources, the Lions have cut Joique Bell.

Bell dealt with ankle and Achilles injuries throughout the 2015 season, and only managed 3.5 yards per carry on 90 attempts.

Cutting Bell opens up the backfield and creates more opportunity for Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick.

Once Jim Bob Cooter became the offensive coordinator, the Lions looked like a completely different team and managed to win six of their last eight games.

However, Cooter wasn’t able to get Abdullah going and he only managed 597 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the season.

Despite Abdullah’s struggles, Theo Riddick was a revelation as a pass-catching running back for the Lions.

Riddick finished 14th in the NFL with 80 catches on 99 targets. He only amassed 697 receivng yards, but he was still one of the more valuable running backs in PPR leagues.

Looking ahead, the Lions really improved in the second half of the 2015 season and have plenty to build on.

One would imagine, the team tries to get Ameer Abdullah more involved in the offense, considering he was their second round pick in 2015, but don’t count out more of the same from Theo Riddick. If Calvin Johnson does retire, Riddick could be counted on just as much.
