It was evident that the Magic had to make a trade with all of the talent on their roster, but wow, this one looks pretty bad on the surface.
According to Chris Broussard, Harris is heading to Detroit and Jennings and Ilyasova are heading to Orlando.
It’s clear that this move, for Orlando, is likely about creating some cap space. Tobias Harris has a four-year $64 million contract that he just signed and expires in 2019.
Jennings’ contract is up this offseason and Ilyasova becomes a free agent in 2017.
If the Magic wanted to cut cap, fine, but they have a glut of intriguing young players that they could have made a bigger move with. To see them trade Harris for what they did, is just a bit disappointing.
Currently, the Pistons are only a half-game out of a playoff spot, and Tobias Harris should give the team a nice boost to potentially sneak into the playoffs.
As for the Magic side, maybe the front office was just as impressed with Aaron Gordon’s dunk contest performance that they wanted to give him more minutes. So, without Harris, Gordon should continue to see at least 30 minutes per game.
I don’t think Jennings will start over Payton but a change of scenery for a least a half a season should be nice for Jennings.
Lastly, Ilyasova could replace Tobias Harris in the starting lineup or maybe Mario Hezonja gets more run.
For now, it looks like the Pistons won this one.
